Scrapie Associated Fibrils (SAF) are abnormal protein aggregates found in the brains of animals affected by scrapie, a fatal degenerative disease that primarily affects sheep and goats. SAFs are thought to play a significant role in the pathogenesis of this disease.
Scrapie, belonging to a family of transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs), is characterized by the accumulation of an abnormal form of the prion protein (PrPSc) in the nervous systems of infected animals.
