Wart Hog Disease, also known as African Swine Fever (ASF), is a highly contagious viral infection that affects domestic and wild pigs. The disease is caused by the African Swine Fever virus (ASFV) and poses a significant threat to the pork industry as it can result in severe economic losses and drastic declines in pig populations.
The virus is not transmissible to humans, hence it is not considered a risk for human health. Wart Hog Disease is primarily transmitted through direct contact with infected pigs or through exposure to contaminated objects, such as equipment, feed, or clothing. It can also spread indirectly through tick bites or via ingestion of infected meat products.
Clinical signs of Wart Hog Disease include high fever, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, and skin hemorrhages. Infected pigs may also display respiratory and reproductive issues, leading to high mortality rates. There is currently no specific treatment or vaccine available for ASF, making early detection and strict biosecurity measures crucial in preventing its spread.
In regions where the disease is prevalent, control and prevention measures involve quarantine of infected premises, culling of affected animals, strict movement restrictions, thorough disinfection, and public awareness campaigns. International trade regulations and surveillance systems are also crucial to prevent the introduction and spread of Wart Hog Disease in unaffected regions.
