A symphilid refers to a minute, soil-dwelling arthropod belonging to the order Symphyla. These elongated and worm-like creatures are generally less than 10 millimeters in length and exhibit a distinctive segmentation of their body. Symphilids are part of the same subphylum, Myriapoda, as millipedes and centipedes, but they have a closer morphological resemblance to centipedes.
Symphilids possess numerous pairs of legs, ranging from 12 to 24, with each leg ending in tarsal claws that aid in their locomotion. They have an elongated head with prominent antennae that enable them to detect environmental stimuli like vibrations and chemicals.
