The word "Sung" or "Song" dynasty refers to a period in Chinese history that lasted from 960 to 1279. The term "Sung" is the Wade-Giles romanization of the Chinese word 宋 (sòng), while "Song" is the pinyin romanization.
The word "Sung" or 宋 is derived from the surname of the ruling family during the dynasty. The first emperor of the Sung dynasty was Emperor Taizu, his given name was Zhao Kuangyin. After unifying China, he established the Song dynasty and chose to use his family's surname, "Sung", as the name of the dynasty.
