The Songhai Empire reached its zenith under the rule of Sunni Ali Ber, who established an effective administrative system and greatly expanded the empire's territory.
The Songhai Empire was known for its strong military, agricultural prowess, and flourishing trade networks. It played a significant role in the trans-Saharan trade, particularly in salt, gold, and other valuable commodities. The empire's capital, Gao, served as a major trading hub and a center for Islamic scholarship and culture.
Tragically, in the 16th century, the Songhai Empire experienced a decline due to internal conflicts, attacks from neighboring states, and invasion by the Moroccan army. This led to the effective disintegration of the empire, although elements of the Songhai culture, language, and traditions continue to thrive among the Songhai people today.
