Skoptsy refers to a religious sect that emerged in 18th century Russia. The name "Skoptsy" is derived from the Russian word "skopets", meaning "castrate", as the members of this sect practiced self-castration as an act of extreme religious devotion. The Skoptsy believed that physical desires and procreation were sinful, so by removing the source of these desires, they sought to liberate themselves from the temptations of the flesh and attain spiritual purity.
Members of the Skoptsy community adhered to strict ascetic practices, including fasting, celibacy, and harsh self-discipline. They rejected traditional gender roles and often adopted gender-neutral names, considering themselves beyond earthly gender distinctions. Skoptsy religious gatherings were characterized by fervent prayers, hymns, and ecstatic rituals.
The Russian Orthodox Church vehemently denounced the Skoptsy as a heretical sect and persecuted its followers for their radical beliefs and practices. Skoptsy communities were disbanded and their members were often imprisoned or exiled. However, despite centuries of persecution, the sect managed to survive in smaller underground groups well into the 20th century.
