Nappy rash, also commonly known as diaper rash, is a skin condition that primarily affects infants, characterized by irritation, inflammation, and discomfort in the area covered by a diaper. It occurs due to prolonged exposure of the baby’s delicate skin to wetness, friction, and irritants found in urine and feces that accumulate in the diaper.
The main symptoms of nappy rash include redness, swelling, and tenderness in the diaper area, particularly on the buttocks, genitals, and thighs. The affected skin may appear raw, scaly, or develop small red bumps. In severe cases, the rash can progress to open sores or blisters, which may be painful to touch.
Nappy rash can be caused by various factors such as wet or dirty diapers that haven't been changed promptly, infrequent diaper changes, the use of harsh soaps or wipes, allergic reactions to certain diaper materials or detergents, or yeast or bacterial infections. Additionally, when babies begin to eat solid foods, certain foods can alter the acidity of the stool and contribute to the development of nappy rash.
To prevent and treat nappy rash, it is important to keep the baby's diaper area clean and dry. Regular diaper changes, gentle cleansing with water or mild baby wipes, and allowing the area to air dry are helpful measures. Applying a barrier cream or ointment can provide a protective layer between the skin and the diaper. In more severe cases, a doctor may prescribe medicated creams or ointments to reduce inflammation and manage any infection present.
