Low Gallberry Holly, scientifically known as Ilex coriacea, is a perennial evergreen shrub that belongs to the holly family, Aquifoliaceae. Native to the Southeastern region of the United States, it is primarily found in moist to wet environments such as bogs, swamps, and marshes.
Low Gallberry Holly typically grows up to 3-6 feet tall with a spreading, rounded habit. It possesses simple, alternate leaves that are leathery, glossy, and dark green in color. The leaves are elliptical in shape, measuring around 1 to 3 inches in length. The undersides of the leaves have a paler shade, creating an attractive contrast.
During spring, Low Gallberry Holly produces small, inconspicuous white flowers that are borne in clusters. These flowers are composed of four petals, and though individually insignificant, they create an elegant display when combined. Following pollination, female plants bear small black or red berries that persist into winter, providing a colorful contrast against the evergreen foliage.

Its tolerance to wet and poorly drained soils makes it an excellent choice for gardens with problematic drainage.
