Holocanthus tricolor, commonly known as the rock beauty, is a species of marine angelfish belonging to the family Pomacanthidae. This species is predominantly found in the tropical regions of the Western Atlantic Ocean, particularly in the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico.
The rock beauty is characterized by its vibrant and striking coloration. It has a compressed and oval-shaped body, with a deep notch at the rear of the dorsal fin. The front portion of its body, including the head and snout, is yellow, while the rear portion is black. It exhibits a distinct white or yellow band that runs diagonally from the base of its dorsal fin to its anal fin, separating the two contrasting color regions. Additionally, it possesses long, flowing dorsal and anal fins, adding to its visual appeal.
Holocanthus tricolor primarily inhabits coral reefs and rocky outcrops, where it feeds on a diet consisting mainly of sponges, tunicates, and algae. Like other angelfish species, it possesses a small, brush-like mouth adapted for grazing on various microorganisms found on the substrate.
Due to its stunning appearance and peaceful demeanor, the rock beauty is a popular choice for aquariums. However, it requires a large tank with suitable hiding spots and ample swimming space. It can be susceptible to certain diseases, therefore appropriate care and attention to water quality and diet are required to maintain its health and vibrant coloration.
