Apoplectic cell refers to an abnormal cellular structure found in certain tissues, primarily the liver. It is characterized by a rounded, swollen appearance with increased eosinophilia, often accompanied by nuclear pyknosis. The term "apoplectic" in the pathological context refers to a state of sudden hemorrhage or bleeding within an organ or tissue, resulting in cell death. Therefore, an apoplectic cell represents a cell undergoing necrosis due to ischemia or infarction resulting from disrupted blood flow.
When viewed under a microscope, apoplectic cells demonstrate distinct morphological changes compared to healthy cells. The nuclear changes present with pyknosis, which manifests as clumping and condensation of the chromatin. Additionally, the cells appear swollen and rounded, showing increased redness upon eosin staining. The identification of apoplectic cells can provide important diagnostic clues, particularly in the liver, where they may be indicative of acute liver infarction, hepatic artery thrombosis, or metastatic cancer.
The presence of apoplectic cells often signifies a serious and acute condition, necessitating further evaluation and treatment.
