Aleukia haemorrhagica is a rare and severe viral hemorrhagic fever that affects a variety of animal species. The term specifically refers to a condition characterized by the absence of white blood cells (leukocytes) accompanied by internal bleeding (hemorrhage). This condition is caused by infection with a specific strain of the parvovirus, known as the aleutian mink disease virus (AMDV).
Typically affecting mink and other mustelids, aleukia haemorrhagica is transmitted through direct contact with infected animals or exposure to contaminated surfaces or materials. The virus primarily targets the bone marrow, which is responsible for producing white blood cells, resulting in a significant reduction or complete absence of leukocytes. This leads to a compromised immune system, leaving affected individuals susceptible to infections and increasing the severity of hemorrhage.
Symptoms of aleukia haemorrhagica include fever, lethargy, anemia, weight loss, jaundice, and hemorrhages in various organs such as the lungs, liver, and gastrointestinal tract. Supportive care, such as blood transfusions and management of secondary infections, is often provided to affected animals.
